ACTion is a group of therapists committed to improving their skills in ACT and related “3rd Wave” Cognitive-Behaviour Therapies such as Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, DBT, Compassion Focused Therapy, and more recent Contextual Schema Therapy models. The interest group started in May 2011 with the aim of developing a local community of therapists who support, network and learn from each other. Attendance at the group meets APS professional development (PD) criteria.
2024 Dates: Fridays 3pm-5pm on: (not in school holidays) 15/3/24, 24/5/24, 30/8/24, 1/11/24 (and from 5pm if you can make it - a social catch-up next door at the Bambamboo restaurant with FREE DRINKS & DUMPLINGS).
2025 Dates: Fridays 3pm-5pm on: (not in school holidays) 7/3/25, 16/5/25, 5/9/25, 7/11/25 (and from 5pm if you can make it - a social catch-up next door at the Bambamboo restaurant with FREE DRINKS & DUMPLINGS).
General Format: Action meetings are 2 hours duration. The format includes small group case presentations / discussions, video of expert therapy sessions, intervention demonstrations by the facilitator, practice of therapy skills and liaison with colleagues.
A focus of each session is also a reading and discussion text; for 2024 this will be:

Facilitator and ACT Trainer: Mitch Hart, Clinical Psychologist
Mitch qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 1986 and over 35 years of clinical experience working in public and private mental health areas. Over this time, he has completed advanced level training in Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness. Mitch currently works in private practice and provides supervision and training to students and colleagues. He has a specialist interest in supervision/therapy skill development and has worked in this role since 1995, supervising about 250 University students, therapists and Clinical Psychologists in small group and individual formats. He is regularly invited to conduct ACT workshops for organisations and in 2011 his work was peer reviewed by the international Association for Contextual Behavioural Science and formally recognised as an ACT trainer (one of 5 trainers in Australia).
Cofacilitator in 2025: Dr Emily Musgrove, Clinical Psychologist
Dr Emily Musgrove is a clinical psychologist, obtaining a combined Masters / PhD in Clinical Psychology in 2011. She has worked across both the public and private sectors and currently owns and operates a private practice based in Claremont. She works predominantly with adults experiencing a range of mental health difficulties and is dedicated to assisting people find greater meaning, purpose and wellbeing in their lives. She has extensive training in both ACT and Mindfulness Based approaches and is a Board Approved Supervisor. Emily also appears as a regular guest on The Imperfects, one of Australia's most popular podcasts. Using an ACT approach, she offers insights, psycho-education and general advice about common mental health issues.
Cofacilitator in 2025: Dr Henry Austin, Clinical Psychologist
Henry is a Clinical Psychologist working in clinical practice, research, and teaching. Henry completed a Master of Clinical Psychology at The University of Western Australia (UWA) and a PhD research project with UWA and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) on the relationship between emotions and alcohol use. Henry's clinical practice encompasses private work and a hospital-wide role at Fiona Stanley Hospital. He enjoys combining clinical practice with involvement in psychological research and training. Henry is an occasional Lecturer at UWA teaching third-wave therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to fourth year undergraduate students. Henry is also a board approved supervisor and he is very excited to join the ACTion training team.

Cancellation policy: For cancellations with more than seven days' notice before the start of the first group, we will give a full refund, minus a $50 admin fee. For cancellations at less than seven days' notice, we will refund fifty percent of the total fee.

What is typically included in supervision sessions? (Video Zoom supervision sessions are also available)
- Therapy skill core competency review to assess strengths and areas for improvement, connected with clarification of the overarching values that guide supervision and skill development.
- Case presentations, formulation and therapy planning
- Therapy interventions practice via modelling, role play and video clip review of expert therapy interventions.
- Therapy process feedback via review of audio or video session recordings
- Support and mentoring through challenging therapy and career circumstances.
- Fulfilling 6 + 2 Clinical Psychology Registrar or 5 + 1 Psychology Board AHPRA supervision competency-based skill development.
WORKSHOPS
Mitch regularly conducts Acceptance and Commitment Therapy introductory and advanced workshops (1-2 days in length). Workshops have been provided to a range of mental health and counselling services such as University Clinical Psychology programs, Health Department Clinical Psychologists, Alcohol and Drug Services and Counselling Agencies.
